Tara Stewart, front woman of TARA, began her music career playing in her parents’ bar in Alice Springs (AUS) from the early age of 10, playing a mix of blues and folk on guitar. At the same time, she kept herself busy exploring other musical styles, engaging in classical and jazz recitals on the saxophone and flute during her time in High School.
At the age of 20, Tara left her Australian homeland and ventured off to Dublin where she met drummer Anthony McMahon from Drogheda who himself had started his musical career in metal and folk music. A year after her arrival to Ireland, Tara felt it was time for a change in terms of her music direction and took a break from performing in order to concentrate on writing music.
She put away the acoustic guitar and decided to experiment with the electric guitar as well as synths. After months of being locked away in the studio, Tara felt she finally found that sound she was looking for. In search of new musicians to collaborate with, together with Anthony she recruited Paul Flood (Bass) and Ally Donald (Guitar). These new additions helped the act – which became known simply as TARA – achieve the live sound they had long been searching for
In January 2013, TARA debuted their new sound at the “Ones to Watch” festival in Whelan’s which saw the act scoop up the coveted Irish Times “Gig of the Week”. Shortly after this, the four-piece felt it was time to find a producer, one who was on the same wavelength as themselves. After sending some demos off to David Prendergast of Overhead, the Albatross, the act found not only a great producer but also a muse for guiding the act in their new sound and direction.
It has taken front woman Tara Stewart many years to find “herself” as a musician, but drawing from influences such as Radiohead, Bjork, Kate Bush and Arctic Monkeys, TARA has found the right balance between pop and electronica to mould and create the sound she has been long searching for.
TARA will release their debut single “STARS” on iTunes on August 29th.
